The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has named Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City as a Center for Quantitative Imaging Excellence for its research in cancer screening, treatment and follow-up care, specifically with modalities such as mammography, PET, CT and MRI.

Researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle have received a $7 million five-year renewal grant award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Cancer Institute (NCI) to continue research in molecular imaging of cancer and its response to therapy. This new award is funded through 2016.

The agreement also includes an option for $3 million of future work based on availability of funding.

An $8.4 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality will enhance the infrastructure of the Indiana Network for Patient Care (INPC), a health information exchange (HIE). The grant supports research that uses data from INPC in comparative effectiveness benefits and harms of three drugs used to treat Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., recently received $3 million from the National Institutes of Health to acquire a new biomedical accelerator mass spectrometry instrument. The instrument will provide analysis for medical and other biological research.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a $5 million, three-year grant to fund ongoing research titled "Studies of Nuclear Reactions and Structure" at Florida State University. The project was previously awarded $4.4 million by the NSF in 2008.
